EXIM
bank Tanzania has handed over ten million shillings to support Bank of
Tanzania’s (BoT) Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund, as
Exim Bank’s commitment to supporting the education sector.
BoT
earlier last month announced that it was to sponsor six undergraduate
and post graduate students pursuing maths, science and technology
studies under the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Speaking during a handover event held at the BoT headquarters in Dar es Salaam at the weekend, the Bank
of Tanzania (BoT) Deputy Governor Economic and Financial Policies Dr.
Natu Mwamba said the Fund is dedicated to the sponsorship of
undergraduate female students pursuing maths, science and technology
studies in the country’s varsities this year.
“The
fund will sponsor both male and female Tanzanians pursuing
undergraduate degrees in economics, information technology, accounting
and finance as well as students intending to pursue master’s programmes
in those fields. “The
scholarship will be granted on academic merit and be based on a
rigorous selection process, it said, adding that successful applicants
will be granted full scholarship including a lap top, ” she said.
Dr
Mwamba said the scholarship will cover all direct university costs --
tuition and registration and all direct student costs-- meals,
accommodation, books and stationery besides field practical training,
special faculty requirements and other related costs as specified in the
respective Institutions’ cost structure. The Exim Bank Tanzania Managing Director Anthony Grant during the occasion said, “Our institution appreciates the importance of supporting the education of promising youth for the future of the nation.”
The bank’s Assistant
Marketing Manager at Exim Bank, Anita Goshashy, added, “As part of our
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the bank has already supported a
number of initiatives in education.”
The
Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund was formally launched
in Arusha last year by H.E. President Jakaya Kikwete with an objective
of promoting interest and excellence in maths, science and technology
courses among female students.
Every
year the Fund intends to sponsor at least 25 eligible students and
beneficiaries of the scholarship will include top female best performers
in math or science subjects and admitted at a Tanzanian university to
pursue undergraduate studies on a full-time basis.
