HARARE – At least six families will be in Zimbabwe’s 8th Parliament after they won the July 31 vote.
For some, it will be a family affair in the National Assembly with
the election of husbands and wives, brothers and sisters for the
forthcoming parliamentary session.
Both Zanu PF and MDC have couples that were elected into Parliament.
Paul Madzore in Glen View South, one of the longest serving MDC
legislators, will be joined by his younger brother Solomon who will be
representing Dzivaresekwa in the National Assembly to debate national
issues and the future of the country.
Paul said he did not read too much into his election victory and that
of his brother and saying they were focusing on the rigging by Zanu PF.
“As we know that the elections were rigged and this is what we are
all worried about, and there is nothing much to celebrate about as our
president said, that there is no need to celebrate a farce election,”
said Madzore.
Former minister of Water Resources (Lobengula) Samuel Sipepa Nkomo
will be coming to the National Assembly together with his wife Roseline
who defeated Jonathan Moyo in Tsholotsho North Constituency.
The Madzores and Nkomo families are from Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC.
In Zanu PF, Emmerson Mnangagwa (Chirumanzi/Zibagwe) will be joined by
his wife Auxillia in Parliament as the couple won in their respective
constituencies.
Former deputy minister of Labour Monica Mutsvangwa (Chimanimani) will
be coming to the National Assembly with her husband Christopher who is
representing Norton.
Tongai Muzenda (Gutu West) will be joined by his sister Tsitsi (Gutu)
— both of whom are children to the late vice president Simon Muzenda.
Rugare Gumbo (Midlands) joins his uncle Joram Gumbo (Mberengwa West) as they have been involved in Zanu PF politics for a span.
There are brothers from the MDC whom were also defeated in the
elections, including Ramsome Makamure (Gutu East) and his brother
Kufachikati Makamure (Gutu).
Tracy Mutinhiri, who wanted to represent the MDC in Marondera East
and her ex-husband Ambrose Mutinhiri who was eyeing Marondera West on a
Zanu PF ticket were both defeated.
Mutinhiri crossed the floor from Zanu PF and joined MDC in 2010 after she was expelled from the party and Parliament.
Marian Chombo was vanquished by ex-husband Ignatius Chombo in Zvimba Constituency.
Theresa Makone and husband Ian both lost in the election.
Theresa was seeking to be re-elected for Harare North, while Ian was
eyeing Goromonzi West where he suffered defeat at the hands of Biata
Nyamupinga.
Shepherd Mushonga (Mazowe Central) together with son Winfield lost in the elections in Mashonaland Central Province.
Shepherd, a former MP, lost to Thabitha Kanengoni, while Winfield was defeated by Kazembe Kazembe in Mazowe West.
