There was scare at Maasai Mara University after students discovered a strange
man in Muslim regalia in their hostel at night.
Earlier, a rumour went round that there
was an imminent terror attack in the institution, something that led to many
students fleeing the campus just in case the rumour was true to avoid the
Garissa campus-like massacre, and many spent the night out of campus.
The stranger was arrested by some brave
students in collaboration with campus security personnel and handed over to the
police. However, the stranger claimed that he was not a terrorist and was just
going to the mosque.
“The stranger, who was arrested,
claimed that he was going to the mosque. Students alerted the security officers
who apprehended him and handed him to the police,” said Erick Serem, the
university security and accommodation director.
The arrest was confirmed by Narok
County Police Commander Abdi Galgalo who thanked the students for being alert.
“It is true that we have one person in
our custody. We want to laud students who identified the stranger and alerted
us in time,” said Galgalo.
Security in institutions of higher
learning has been beefed up following the massacre of 147 students in Garissa
University which the Al Shabaab claimed to be just but the beginning.
