The Interior Coordination Ministry on Tuesday denied reports that a
National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer was arrested in Netherlands while
trying to interfere with an International Criminal Court (ICC) witness.
In a statement issued by the Interior
Ministry Spokesman, Mwenda Njoka, those media reports amounted to
defamation because the said officer was detained at Schiphol Airport due to
discrepancies in his travel documents and did not even set foot in Netherlands.
“The officer did not set foot in the
Netherlands but was arrested and detained at the airport during the entire
period," Njoka said.
Media reports indicated that the NIS
officer was deported last week for trying to contact an ICC witness in the
case facing Deputy President William Ruto and his co- accused, Joshua Sang.
The spokesman said that on April 13,
while at the airport, Dutch Migration officials discovered that the individual
in question had discrepancies in his travel documents.
"He was flown back to Kenya on
April 16 owing to the defective documents,” he said.
Other sources indicate that the
senior NIS official was trying to bribe the witness so that he can recant his
testimony in Ruto’s case.
