The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, is expected to visit Kenya
in May to bolster the Kenyan Government’s efforts in fighting Al Shabaab
extremists.
Kerry, who will be sent by US
President, Barrack Obama, is expected to hold talks with East African Head of
States on how to defeat terrorists especially Al Shabaab militias in
Somalia.
Kerry’s visit comes in the wake
of revelations that the Islamic State (ISIS) is increasingly funding Al Shabaab
militants to launch attacks in Kenya over the presence of Kenya Defence Forces
(KDF) in Somalia
"He will be in Kenya to
demonstrate US' commitment to fighting terrorism in the region and ensuring
stability,” a source at the US embassy in Nairobi said.
Although Kerry’s trip to
Nairobi is a closely guarded secret, those who spoke to The Kenyan DAILY
POST said he will address issues around Al Shabaab’s financing and
how to provide KDF with sophisticated weaponry that can eliminate Al Shabaab
for once.
Kerry’s visit will come two months
before US President Barrack Obama lands in Nairobi to attend the Global
Entrepreneurship Summit in July.
Obama was invited to the summit by
His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta.
