There would have been no need for the Recce Unit to be called in to
neutralize the Al Shabaab terrorists should a plan by some brave students had
seen the light of day.
According to one survivor of the
Garissa attack, Mr. Bervin Cheruiyot, a second year education student and
former student chairman, they had planned to kill the Al Shabaab themselves
because there was no way out for them and they didn’t want to die on their
knees.
He noted that after realizing that they
would die anyway like their fallen colleagues, him and his colleagues, who were
still alive, had decided to confront the terrorists and kill them if possible.
Cheruiyot said that although they were
very much aware of the risks, they cared less because there was no way out for
them and Recce Squad was taking too long and who knows, they might have killed
the terrorists and saved many souls.
“We became brave because we could not
run. We planned to attack one of the terrorists by the name Mohammud, kill him
and use his weapons to kill the rest but it seems he noticed and had marked my
face. He slapped me and kept a close watch,” revealed Cheruiyot.
“We had witnessed the Al Shabaab
slaughter one student after another and we didn’t want to join the statistics
while lying down. We had sworn to die fighting,” he continued.
However, some of his friends were shot
dead including the one lying next to him and the entire plan was nipped in the
bud. He survived miraculously by camouflaging in blood.
