Mainstream and evangelical churches in Kenya have expressed their
disappointment in the Government of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy,
William Ruto, for legalizing homosexuality in Kenya.
This follows a court ruling early this
week legalizing activities of gays and lesbians, where the State was asked to
register their associations to fight for their rights and freedoms under the
Kenyan Constitution.
Speaking in Nakuru yesterday, ACK
Archbishop, Eliud Wabukala, trashed the ruling terming it ‘naïve and
inconsiderate’.
He said the court ruling legalizing
homosexuality went against Christian, Islamic and African traditional norms,
and as such, the church would not be party to it.
“I particularly state that the Anglican
Church of Kenya is against the ruling. The decision by the court to grant gays
the right to be registered is inconsiderate and negates religious and family
norms on which the Kenyan society is based. The Constitution of Kenya only
recognises marriage between a man and a woman,” said Wabukala.
Similar sentiments were echoed by
evangelical churches which vowed to appeal the court ruling saying legalizing
gays and lesbians was bad for the country.
“We will talk with our lawyers to see
how we can appeal the decision by the High Court but we cannot give a timeline
at the moment,” said Evangelical Alliance of Kenya Chairman, Bishop Mark
Kariuki.
