The Kenya
Police Airwing Commandant, Rogers Mbithi, has defended allegations that he used
a police aircraft to airlift his family members from Mombasa to Nairobi in the
morning of a terror attack at the Garissa University College.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday morning,
the police boss said that it was pure coincidence that the plane airlifted his
family members and the plane was on an official duty with Inspector Mutai being
undertaken through “Instrument Reading”
training.
However, the police boss failed to
explain why the instrument reading training had to be done on the Mombasa route
and the coincidence that his family members were travelling from Mombasa the
same day.
The confused police boss, who Kenyans
are calling for his immediate sacking, also failed to explain why the plane had
to land for only fifteen minutes before taking off again for Nairobi.
Sources said the plane which was to
be used by Reece officers, landed at Wilson Airport at 11:35 am when the
Inspector of Police, Joseph Boinett, and the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Joseph
Nkaissery, had already landed in Garissa.
But Mr Mbithi said the aircraft that
carried the Recce officers was available before the officers arrived at the
airport.
However, a senior Reece squadron
officer said they waited for two hours at Wilson Airport before they boarded
the plane to Garissa where they rescued more than 500 students.
