The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has come to the defense of
Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) and Haki Africa over allegations that they
are the financiers of Al Shabaab terror group.
This is after the Government of
President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, William Ruto, froze the human rights
organizations’ accounts among 84 others in the pretext that they fund Al Shabaab’s
activities in Kenya.
However, KHRC refuted Government claims
saying MUHURI and Haki Africa are not and have never been associated with Al Shabaab.
In a statement to the press, KHRC noted
that Uhuru/ Ruto’s move to freeze the two organizations’s accounts was driven
by malice and meant to shift focus from the main issue and cover up for the
Government’s failures.
The commission appealed to the
President and his Deputy to release the accounts of MUHURI and Haki Africa and
look for real Al Shabaab financiers elsewhere.
The two organizations were also
defended by over 15 international organizations saying they have been faithful
to their objectives and have never financed Al Shabaab.
