Police have gunned down two suspected Al Shabaab terrorists in a
fierce exchange of fire that left one Flying Squad officer nursing serious
gunshot injuries.
The incident happened at Shaumu area in
Kwale on Saturday morning.
Kenya’s intelligence community established
that the two were part of an Al Shabaab cell of eleven members who were
recently trained in Somalia and have come back to wreak havoc.
The available intel indicated that over
70 youths from the area had joined the Al Shabaab in Somalia for training in
recent years and were coming back to carry out terror attacks.
Even as the youths continue to get
radicalized and join Al Shabaab, local leaders are too afraid to address the
matter for fear that Al Shabaab could come for their heads as those who have
talked to the police before about the issue never live long.
“This matter is so grave and we have
to tread carefully, we might say something that can land us in problems,"
said Ukunda MCA, Omar Kitengele.
